In Shopping, you do not bid on keywords. You bid on how well your product data is written.
Google Shopping spends steadily, your products show against the wrong searches, and there is no keyword field to fix it in.

In a Search campaign you choose the keywords. In Shopping and Performance Max you do not — Google decides which searches your products match, and it decides using your product data.
That makes the feed the single highest-leverage asset in an ecommerce Google Ads account, and it is usually whatever the store exported by default two years ago. Case studies routinely show 20% to 30% swings in click-through rate from title changes alone, with no change in bids.
This is what to fix, in order.
Titles: the field that does most of the work
Your product title is what Google reads to decide what you sell, and it is what the shopper reads to decide whether to click. Those are two different jobs and the title has to do both.
Most store-exported titles are written for the product page, where the customer already knows the context. In a Shopping result there is no context — just the title, the price and the image.
| Weak title | Stronger title |
|---|---|
| Aurora Chair | Aurora Adirondack Patio Chair, Weather-Resistant Cedar, Natural Brown |
| Vitamin C Serum | Vitamin C Face Serum 15%, Brightening, 30ml, Sensitive Skin |
| Running Shoes - Blue | Mens Road Running Shoes, Cushioned, Blue, UK Size 9 |
| Cotton Kurta | Mens Cotton Kurta, Full Sleeve, Regular Fit, Navy, Size L |
The attributes that change eligibility
Several feed fields are not cosmetic — a missing or wrong value removes the product from results it would otherwise have appeared in.
- Google product category — the taxonomy value. Wrong category, wrong searches, and the fix costs nothing.
- Product type — your own taxonomy, and useful for structuring campaigns and bids later.
- GTIN and MPN — identifiers. Missing ones reduce eligibility for a meaningful share of placements.
- Availability and price — must match the landing page exactly. A mismatch causes disapproval, and disapprovals are the quietest way to lose visibility.
- Size, color, material, gender, age group — for apparel these are effectively mandatory, and incomplete values cost impressions directly.
- Image — the first thing a shopper judges. A cluttered or low-resolution image loses the click before the title is read.
Using the feed to control spend
Because you cannot bid on keywords, the feed and campaign structure are where budget control lives.
- Split products into groups by margin, not by category. Your highest-margin products should not compete for budget against your loss leaders inside the same group.
- Exclude products you cannot profitably advertise — low margin, low stock, poor reviews, or high return rate. Excluding is a strategy, not an admission of defeat.
- Use custom labels to mark seasonal items, clearance, best sellers and margin bands, then structure campaigns around those labels.
- Check the disapproval list weekly. A product disapproved on a technicality is a product earning nothing while still appearing to be in the campaign.
Return rate belongs in the feed decision
In categories with high returns — apparel especially, and anywhere cash on delivery dominates — the products worth advertising are not simply the ones that convert best. A product converting well with a 35% return rate is losing money that no Shopping report will show you. Segment by delivered contribution, and exclude accordingly.
The maintenance nobody schedules
Feed quality decays. New products arrive with default titles, attributes drift, prices change, items go out of stock and stay in the feed.
- Monthly: review disapprovals, check that new products have proper titles, confirm availability accuracy
- Quarterly: re-check category assignments, review which products are actually generating spend versus impressions, refresh the exclusion list
- After any catalog change: verify that the feed reflects it within a day, not a week
This is unglamorous and it is where ecommerce Google Ads accounts are actually won. A brand with a well-maintained feed and average bidding will beat a brand with a neglected feed and sophisticated bidding, every time.
Common questions
How much does product title optimization affect Shopping performance?
Case studies commonly report 20% to 30% swings in click-through rate from title changes alone, with no bid change. Titles carrying brand, product type and key attributes consistently outperform short generic ones.
What should a Google Shopping product title include?
Brand, product type, and the two or three attributes that define the buying decision in your category — size, color, material, quantity or model. Front-load the product type so a truncated title still says what the item is.
Why are my products not showing in Shopping?
Most often a disapproval, a missing identifier, a wrong product category, or a price or availability mismatch against the landing page. Check the disapproval list first; it is the quietest way to lose visibility.
Should I advertise every product in my catalog?
No. Exclude products you cannot profitably advertise — low margin, low stock, poor reviews or high return rate. In high-return categories, judge by delivered contribution rather than by conversion rate.
Does the feed matter for Performance Max too?
Yes, and arguably more, because there is even less keyword-level control. The feed is the main lever you retain over what a Performance Max campaign shows and to whom.
