Most founders calculate ROAS simply as Revenue divided by Ad Spend. But real profit requires deducting every per-order variable cost:
Contribution Margin = AOV − (COGS + Shipping + Processing Fees + Returns)
Break-Even ROAS = AOV ÷ Contribution Margin
Target CPA = Contribution Margin − Desired Profit
In reality, every SKU in your catalog has a different COGS, and blended ad spend touches multiple products. A store with 80% gross margins (e.g. digital goods or luxury beauty) can be highly profitable at a 1.5x ROAS, while a store with 25% gross margins (e.g. consumer electronics or heavy goods with high freight) will lose significant money even at a 3.0x ROAS. Your break-even threshold is dictated entirely by your unit economics, never by an ad platform's generic average.
